6 degrees of separation

Perhaps October is a good month for God to make us realize intensely just how small the world is, or how freaky it is that almost everyone knows someone who knows that somebody... Or maybe it's just facebook trying to show its power.

Here are some examples (not in chronological order):
Case 1:
A colleague of mine actually knew a friend of mine whom I have known since uni days! Would never have thought they knew each other.

Case 2:
The boyfriend of a colleague of mine is actually the high school friend of my university friend cum housemate of 2 years.

Case 3:
A new found friend of mine (who is friend of friend of my colleague's boyfriend who is the high school friend of my university friend cum housemate of 2 years, aka Case 2) is actually the sister of the boyfriend of my ex-colleague.

Case 4:
Another friend of mine is actually the brother of the husband of my another ex-colleague.

Case 5:
A random ang-mo guy who so happened sat next to Xann and me at the cafe at Zoo Negara actually studied the same course in the same university as me at almost the same period of time. (What is the probability?)

Note to self: My life seemed to evolve around my colleagues, my ex-colleagues, or my colleague's friends, or my ex-colleague's friends, or their friend's friend. Sad, very sad.
Note to self 2: I'm beginning to think that the word 'friend' somehow look super wrong... The spelling I mean.

Modern European Cuisine @ Bijou, Mont Kiara

Couple weeks ago, actually a month or so ago I happened to stumble across the website for this cute, cosy, feminine little cafe called Bijou @ facebook. (It actually came from an invitation to go for a gathering for dateless people. I of course didn't go with the gang!)

I like what I saw, so I dragged my aiya-lesbian partner kamjie to go with me to check out this place during mooncake festival. We sat at the alfresco area and although it was situated near some condominiums, it was quiet and when night fell, there was chirping of crickets and croaking of frogs/toads. Honestly I *miss* this nature orchestra where I used to hear during my kampung childhood times.

Anyway, back to the food, we ordered some steamed fish & roast duck. Both were delicious with a huge "D"! The drinks were so-so only... The price, a tad on the high side but hey, I LOVEEEE this place because the ambience is just way too nice!

I would have taken more pictures of Bijou because I love the interior (which I must admit inspired me to give my blog a facelift), however, the waitress wouldn't allow me. :'(

By the way, they are nice enough to let us have mooncakes at their premises hohohoho~ So the service is A-OK! *winkz*

So How Do I Rate It?

upgraded!

Am feeling a little pink, fuchsia, purple... basically ladylike colour nowadays. (I think I'm going through a *major* change in myself... hmmphh)

It took me a longggggg time to search for all the pictures and arranged them just exactly the way i like it and then resize, resize, resize till it fits the screen. And then I have to choose the colour for all the rest so that it looks good. Pretty isn't it? - Just like the owner! *bLek* I'm so proud of myself. Hohoho!

BBQ @ home sweet home

I think I forgot to mention what was all the grocery shopping for... BBQ AT HOME! Dad bought some hugggeeee prawns and scallops (both my favourite!) and there's pork and mutton and dad's prized sweet potato which he grew with his brothers (for fun, seriously... *sweat*).

I personally enjoyed the food a lot since there's someone who's doing the barbecuing, and there's alcohol to be consumed! hahaha (freak alcoholic).

grocery shopping = marriage life?

I accompanied my parents to grocery shopping today at the new Giant in Melaka. During the 1.5 hours time we pushed the trolley up down left right front and back of the supermarket; compared prices of the fish; admired the cut of the lamb shoulder; picked the reddest tomato; argued over vitagen and yakult; dicussed the benefits of oat & muesli; debated whether if wholemeal or multigrain bread contains more fibre; waited in line for peanut butter waffles; chose between arabian or columbian coffee beans; and met two of my parents' couples friends who did almost exactly the same thing as us, except that they don't have, within their near vincinity, an argumentative daughter who will sneakily slipped in her favourite vitagen into the trolley no matter what her mum says.

Makes me wonder, does happy grocery trips made up a harmonious marriage life?

An Ode to Elevator

Elevator is a strange place created that most city folks who stay in condominiums, service apartments and flats, or work in high-rise buildings, will inevitably invariably use on a daily basis (even those that stays one floor up only!).

Elevator creates a special moment for people who doesn't know each other or might otherwise never cross path in their lifetime to meet. Or to trap people in a tight confined space who don't know where to put their eyes or their hands or their feet when they're inside a lift with a stranger.

What do you do in a lift with a stranger? Do you stare fixedly at the level numbers displayed on the little screen while muttering 'faster la faster la'? Or lacking the digital display you play with your phone, or check your watch, or have a sudden interest in your nails or your shoes? Or do you take the opportunity to examine other people's wardrobe?

When you are in your residential elevator, do you smile & nod at your neighbours? Do you try to create an idle chat with them to pass the waiting time to reach your floor? Or do you plainly ignore them?

So what have you done when you are alone in the elevator?
- Utilize the mirror inside to check your appearances / apply make up
- Wave or make silly faces to the security camera
- Adjust your bra straps, pants, shoelaces, etc
- Looking for your car keys / house keys
- Read / Listen to mp3s
- Nap?

What is the worst situation you can find yourself in the elevator? (in no order of priority)
- You talk something bad about someone and after that realized the person is standing right behind you
- The door opens and you find two people having sex (or more? *shocked*)
- You want to pee but the elevator is moving oh-so-slowly!
- Somebody just let out a particularly nasty fart
- Someone needs a shower, badly

This one definitely takes the cream: Got stuck in an elevator break down and your mobile phone line is nil and the emergency button is not functioning and...
- you need to use the bathroom badly
- OR your water broke (time to deliver a baby!)
- OR you are stuck with somebody with a badddddd BO

Actually... that reminded me of a video clip of two people fondling each other in the lift and got captured by the security camera. Ahh.. but I digress.

And therefore it is of my opinion that most people prefer to take the elevator ALONE... break down or not.

See, if human never evolve, if electricity and steel were never discovered, we will never be caught dead in any of the situations above. Then again, we wouldn't be able to blog or surf net or MSN. *cold shudder*

an ideal job

Wonderkittie & loony (welcome back loony!) were talking about jobs satisfaction, job criteria, headhunters, people who changes job frequently, people who stays in a job for draconian years... then the topic about ideal job came up.

my ideal job description:
1) drink, smoke and eat all I want (networking)
2) club & pub-hop all I want (entertaining)
3) wake up anytime I want (flexible working hours)
4) laptop with internet connection (mobility & connectivity)
5) holiday around the globe (willingness to travel)

Any company offering jobs like this? Call me please? ASAP? hahahaha :P

Chicken Ball Rice, Ee Jin Ban Chicken Rice Ball, Malacca

Now for all the non-Malaccans, who doesn't want to have chicken rice balls when they're in Malacca, right? I mean, this particular dish involving people rubbing squeezing squashing perfectly normal rice into a ball-like apparition is *THE* food you have to try when you are in Malacca. (What's with the fascination of balls anyway?)

And people like us (Malaccans, veteran chicken rice balls eater, etc) are particularly sick of it because it has been so commercialized that the chicken rice balls doesn't even remotely begin to represent the chicken rice already.

So imagine my delight when my mum brought me to this place - Ee Jin Ban Chicken Rice Ball, and I discovered dang, their chicken rice balls are the quality that we Malaccans are looking for the longest time! (admittedly the name is dodgy)

The first bite of the chicken rice ball makes me felt nostalgia - it has all the goodness of chicken essence soaked up in that one ball. Ok, fine, exaggeration but hey, you've got to try it before you understand what I mean.

And the roasted chicken is succulent with a big 'S'!

Well, in the yonder years chicken rice ball stalls only sell chicken and chicken rice ball. Guess they have to evolve in order to keep up with all the competitions? So anyway, they do sell other side dishes such as stir fry vegetables and sambal sotong and omelette - all of which gave a very 'home-cook' feel.

The vege

The sambal sotong

The omelette... sorry, I took a chunck out of it before realization sinked in that I have to take picture

Here's a little story on how my mum manages to find this little unassuming restaurant. One fine day she has just finished her errands and was standing nearby this little eatery waiting for her ride when the owner of this shop came up to her and asked if she needed any help? Note: He didn't ask if she wants to eat or anything. He merely extending a helping hand. I mean, where can you find such people anymore right? And the service they have in the restaurant is SUPER STAR!

Ichiban desu Ee Ji Ban Chicken Rice Ball. (sorry, can't resist the pun! :P)

So quickly make your way down to taste it before it get commercialized! Where is it? Urm... it's on the row of street after the Maybank which is after Mahkota Parade. Does this makes any sense to anyone? Ok... it's on the same street as the Malacca Club... Err... I'll go find out the exact street name & update ok?

Claypot Chicken Rice, Restaurant Busy Corner @ Damansara Jaya

Yes, I know I have been MIA-ing hence there are no posts on KL side on http://www.thelocalking.com... How sad. Aileen, what have you been up to lately eh? :P

Actually even though I haven't write for some time, I have been secretly (ok, not so secretly) and dutifully (fine, lazily and half-heartedly!) taking pictures of the nice food places I sometimes visited, frequently visited, and have the urge to visit once I saw the advertisement.

So I want to introduce to you one place which I frequently visited with my colleagues - Claypot Chicken Rice at Restaurant Busy Corner @ Damansara Jaya. In fact, we've been there like >4 times last month, it's disgusting how much we like it.

First, the heart-warming boiled soup which you *MUST* try! My personal favourite is the old cucumber soup. Then again, I'm a soup groupie. haha.

Next will be the main dish which we all salivated for: the Claypot Rice! There are several choices which you can choose from: Original*, Tom Yam*, prawn and red bean paste**.
* = tested & tried before = nice
** = never tested = you try & let me know?

tom yam flavour

How can you resist this?

It is fulled with exploding flavour, as you will know after the first bite you have.

How can we forget the important fibers? Remember to order the pan fried vegetables to balance up your nutrition! They have daily selections of in-season veges.

Best of all, it is not expensive at all! So do give it a go!

dazed

...is how I felt recently. Actually more like muddled-brain, bewildered, confused, befuddled, stupefied on my general outlook of life.

I know have a good life, a good job, a good boss, good friends, a very nice family and I'm grateful for it every single day. So what is missing?? I guess it's because I'm hitting a patch of what people nowadays called 'quarter life crisis' - for quite some time already actually.

A big part of me wanted to break free of what I am comfortable with now and plunged into the exciting risky unfamiliar territory and just go crazy and get all the experiences that I'm dying to get. Another part of me is scared.

And hence I was stuck yet again in the middle of the rut. I've had this couped up feeling for such a long time and didn't do anything about it. Or more like, tried to do something about it but didn't work out after all. And I tried to substitute this hollow feeling for something less intangible and still it didn't seem to work... After some time that is.

Hence the sulky mood, and thus the none existence blogging for these time.

Well, now I do have a new target, a new agenda in my life (finally). And I shall make it happened. :)
